NHGRI new $1000 genome grants include Oxford Nanopore collaborators Aug 2008

The US National Human Genome Research Initiative (NHGRI) has made a further series of grants to academics who are furthering technologies for more powerful and affordable DNA analysis.  The largest award was granted to a team led by members of Oxford Nanopore Technologies' Advisory Board, Professors Dan Branton and Jene Golovchenko from Harvard University.

Mitochondrial DNA of Neanderthal sequenced Aug 2008
The mitochondrial DNA from the 38,000 year old remains of a Neanderthal has been sequenced by researchers at the Max Planck Institute in Germany.  The sequence data suggest that humans and Neanderthals separated about 660,000 years ago, and that their population was very small.
